Key Issues and Objectives
Contamination: Nanoplastics, Microplastics, PFAS, and Lead Recent studies have detected alarming levels of nanoplastics and microplastics in the environment and human bodies. Additionally, PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," pose significant environmental and health risks due to their persistence in water supplies. Current filtration technologies are insufficient. Lead contamination in service lines, especially in older communities, also presents a significant health risk. My commitment is to stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and implement effective mitigation strategies to ensure the safety of our water resources and safeguard public health.
Water Affordability Ensuring all residents have access to affordable water is crucial. I propose studying and, if viable, developing a program that offers a basic allotment of water to residential customers at little or no cost, with a graduated scale for those who exceed this allotment. Commercial and industrial customers would be excluded to focus on residential needs. This approach aims to balance affordability with responsible water usage.
Long-Term Sustainability Promoting water conservation, enhancing infrastructure, protecting natural water bodies and wetlands are essential for long-term sustainability.
Public Engagement and Education A collaborative approach with residents, businesses, and local governments will foster a stronger, more informed community in the stewardship of our water resources.
Vision and Goals
If elected, I am dedicated to protecting and managing Oakland County's water resources by addressing emerging threats and leveraging innovative technologies. My mission includes:
- Ensuring safe and clean water for all residents.
- Promoting sustainable water management.
- Supporting renewable energy initiatives in water facilities.
- Enhancing water efficiency through conservation.
- Protecting and restoring wetlands as natural carbon sinks.
· By addressing key issues like contamination, water affordability, and sustainability, I am committed to ensuring a healthy and sustainable future for all residents of Oakland County. Together, we can protect and manage our precious water resources for generations to come.
